STEP TWO:
Find out more about W.E.B. Dubois and social justice for black Americans.
It may be hard to imagine the daily lives of blacks during this period and what effects oppression has on your mind, so it is imperative to uncover as much as possible about the spirit of the oppressed. W.E.B. Dubois's The Souls of Black Folk sheds light on the black American experience during Reconstruction. As you read, try to understand the emotions that Dubois implies while describing the black American's experience.

STEP THREE:
Find out more about Booker T. Washington and his view black American reintegration into society through self-empowerment.
Booker T. Washington's "Atlanta Compromise" speech stirred white and black Americans alike: it called for the cooperative efforts of both parties to help solve the social crises that slavery caused. In order to restore social stability, Washington explains that black Americans must put their grudges behind them and climb the social ladder from bottom to top, starting with the common labors they've become acclimated to in their enslavement. As you read, try to figure out Booker T. Washington means by "casting down your bucket." If the ship seeking water represents black Americans during Reconstruction, what does the water represent?

STEP FOUR:
Answer to the Human Government Coalition.
The Human Government Coalition demands your answers; the time has come! They reveal that they must have at least one paragraph (of five sentences each) per question. Below are the questions they need answers to. Remember to cite at least one resource in each response and address your captors with respect, or they might send you back to prehistoric times...!
First Question: What is more important when healing a society, social justice or economic efficiency (obtaining jobs, property, etc.)?
Second Question: What role should the government play in rebuilding society after slavery? (Check out the additional resources, especially the University of Houston's website.)
Third Question: What steps should be made to ensure that the formerly enslaved gain and retain full citizenship in the new society?
